"LET ME WIN.
BUT IF I CAN NOT WIN,
LET ME BE BRAVE IN THE ATTEMPT."

THE MISSION AND HISTORY OF SPECIAL OLYMPICS

Special Olympics transforms lives through the joy of sport. Special Olympics is the largest sports organization for people with intellectual disabilities:
with more than 4.7 million athletes in 169 countries
-- and over a million volunteers.*

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. This gives them opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

In Special Olympics, through the power and joy of sport, highlights what our athletes CAN do, not what they can't. Attention to disabilities fades away, and instead we see our athletes' talents and abilities -- and applaud them for all that they can do. And they are doing a lot!

Changing Attitudes

Special Olympics strives to raise awareness about the abilities of people with intellectual disabilities.

Through sports, the skills and dignity of our athletes are showcased. We know the challenges our athletes must overcome and the barriers they face every single day. We see this at training events and competitions as our athletes push to become better each year! And watching them succeed is the greatest reward of all!
